Choosing a rental car and mileage allowance for your route

Plan city trips and longer routes against your car's mileage offer. Compare included kilometres, paid options, insurance and deposit before booking.

Rental mileage: plan your route and choose an allowance

Plan the route before choosing a mileage option. Include the return journey, local driving and a margin for detours, then compare that estimate with the offer for your chosen car and dates.

Check the mileage offer for your chosen car and dates. Included kilometres and paid mileage choices depend on the vehicle and the selected rental duration. Use the figures shown on the car page, in booking and in your quote.

Mileage and insurance are separate choices

A mileage option changes the distance included in the rental. An insurance option changes the applicable cover and can also change the refundable deposit. Choosing more kilometres does not automatically add insurance cover.

Check the price, included distance and any extra-kilometre charge for the displayed mileage choice. Then compare insurance terms and the deposit shown for that option. A lower deposit does not mean zero liability: exclusions, excess and the rental terms still matter.

Calculate the whole route

Add every leg, including pickup, the return trip and stops around your destination. For Prague–Plzeň or Prague–Karlovy Vary, a one-way navigation estimate covers only part of a return trip. Use the actual pickup and return locations, and leave room for parking searches or a change of plan.

If the offer states a daily allowance, use the number of charged rental days shown in the quote. Check the terms before assuming you can move unused kilometres between days.

Arithmetic example only, not a rental tariff: if an offer explicitly gives 120 km per charged day and your quote shows three days, that makes 360 km. A planned 420 km route exceeds that allowance by 60 km. Compare the extra-kilometre cost with the available paid mileage choices.

Choose the car for the journey

Distance is only one part of the decision. Compare the current fleet for passenger space, luggage, seat comfort and fuel or charging needs.

JourneyWhat to planWhat to check on the car
Prague and a day tripReturn route plus local stopsParking size, seats and the displayed mileage allowance
Longer motorway routeBreaks, luggage and detoursSeat comfort, fuel range or charging stops
Several days with changing stopsA realistic maximum distanceMileage choices and their total price
Germany, Austria or another countryDestinations and border crossingsPermission and insurance conditions for those countries

Extra mileage does not grant permission to cross a border. Confirm the destinations and applicable cover before booking.

Check passengers and luggage first

Count everyone travelling, including anyone joining halfway through the trip. Check the listed seats and ask about rear-seat space if adults will spend several hours there. A car that suits two people around Prague can be a poor fit once you add passengers and luggage for a longer journey.

Describe the bags you will bring: large suitcases, cabin bags, a pushchair or sports equipment. A boot-capacity figure alone does not tell you whether their shapes fit. Confirm any child-seat or additional-driver requirements before choosing the car, and include the applicable costs in the comparison.

Plan fuel and charging along the route

For petrol and diesel cars, look at the actual route, refuelling opportunities and the agreed fuel-return condition. City traffic, motorway driving and a loaded car can produce different consumption. Leave time for the final fuel stop; the cheapest rental rate may not produce the lowest trip cost.

For a hybrid, check which type the listed car uses and whether charging is possible or required. A plug-in model needs a realistic charging plan if you intend to use its electric range. For an electric car, confirm the connector, suitable stations, payment access and charging arrangements at your accommodation. Keep an alternative stop in case your planned charger is occupied. Compare the trip with a practical range estimate for the journey, including weather and luggage, and confirm the required battery level on return.

Allow for a changing itinerary

Keep a main route and a longer plausible version. For a Prague stay, the second version might include an extra regional trip; for a touring holiday, it could include a different overnight stop. Estimate each version separately and compare both with the same offer. This makes the cost of changing the plan easier to judge.

Compare the total quote for realistic pickup and return times. An overnight stay can change the charged duration, parking, accommodation and route, so calculate the whole plan before choosing it. Adding a day merely to obtain more kilometres may cost more than an available mileage option. Keep the deposit separate from the trip budget because it is money you need available, even when it is refundable.

Ask how mileage is recorded at handover and return, how any overage is settled, and what happens if you need to extend the rental. Confirm whether a mileage choice can be changed later and when approval is needed. Keep the agreed answer with your booking details.

Compare the final offer

Use the same car, dates and pickup and return times when comparing choices. A change in duration can change the price and the offer.

Before confirming, check the rental total, mileage allowance, insurance, refundable deposit and any extra-kilometre charge together. Read the rental terms and use the FAQ for general guidance. If a figure is missing or unclear, confirm it before booking.

FAQ

How do I choose mileage if the route is not final?

Estimate the longest route you are likely to drive, including the return and local stops. Compare it with the allowance and paid choices displayed for your car and dates.

Is mileage counted per day or across the whole rental?

Follow the allowance stated in your offer and quote. If it is expressed per day, check the charged duration and whether the terms allow unused kilometres to carry between days.

What happens if I drive more than the allowance?

Check the extra-kilometre rate and settlement conditions for the chosen car before booking. Compare that expected cost with the paid mileage choices.

Does insurance change the refundable deposit?

It can. Check the deposit displayed for each insurance option and in the final quote. A lower deposit does not remove liability or policy exclusions.

Can I drive to Germany or Austria?

Confirm permission for the intended countries and the applicable insurance conditions before booking. Choosing more kilometres is a separate decision.
