A sports-car weekend as a gift: how to give it and when

A weekend in a sports car works as a gift when the recipient keeps the choices. You buy a Masons voucher, and they pick the car and the dates later. Your job is to check three things before you pay: whether they can rent the car at all, what the voucher leaves for them to settle, and how early to order.

What the recipient actually receives

A Masons voucher is for the amount you choose, toward a premium car rental in Prague. It does not reserve a car or a date. When the recipient is ready, they contact the team with the voucher, a preferred car and dates, and the team confirms availability, driver eligibility, the rental price and how the voucher value is applied.

You order by email. The voucher page opens a prepared message in your mail app, and the team then agrees the value, payment, issue and delivery with you. No payment is taken online, and the unique voucher number is issued only after confirmation; the voucher image on the page is a preview. Delivery is either a PDF by email, ready to share or print, or a handover in Prague arranged with the team. You can add the recipient's name and a personal message of up to 180 characters, and choose one of three finishes: Obsidian, Ivory or Champagne.

Check that the recipient can rent the car

Our team confirms driver eligibility when the recipient arranges the car, and the requirements are listed for each car: a driver aged at least 21 who has held a valid licence for at least 2 years, with an ID document and a payment card in the driver's own name. If the recipient is under 21 or near that line, ask our team about the conditions before you buy. A second driver has to be named too: tell the team about every intended driver before reserving.

A refundable deposit is separate from the rental price and depends on the car and the insurance package. At handover it is secured by a hold on a payment card, or paid by bank transfer or in cash, and the amount is on each car page.

What to confirm with the team

The voucher value goes toward the rental rate. When the car is arranged, confirm these points with our team:

• any remaining rental balance;
• the deposit;
• insurance upgrades;
• extra mileage;
• delivery.

Some questions are best settled before you pay: how long a voucher is valid, whether it can be passed to another person, whether money can be refunded, what happens to an unused balance and whether one voucher can cover more than one rental. Ask our team for validity, transfer and refund terms before paying. Do that before the gift is wrapped, not after.

Shape the weekend

Rental length is counted in 24-hour periods from the pickup time. Pickup on Friday at 18:00 and return on Sunday at 18:00 make two days, not three, and a return after the grace period, 30 minutes by default, starts a new charged day. Daily rates fall into five bands by length of rental, and a weekend sits in the shortest one, 1-3 days.

Mileage is set per car as a daily allowance, with a charge for each extra kilometre, so do not assume unlimited mileage. By default the rental applies within Czechia. Leaving Czechia, for Austria or Germany for example, needs prior written consent, decided case by case, plus a surcharge for extended insurance, so do not promise a border crossing in the card. Choose the season with the recipient in mind

Our guide to convertibles in Czechia puts open-roof weather at roughly May to September, plus a few dry days in April and October. In winter a convertible is an ordinary car with a more vulnerable roof.

Winter adds a legal point for any car. Between 1 November and 31 March, section 40a of the Road Traffic Act requires winter tyres with at least 4 mm of tread on a passenger car when the road has continuous snow, ice or frost, or when the weather makes them likely. There is no calendar obligation for the whole period. Ask about the tyres on the specific car for the chosen date, particularly in late October and early April.

If you are buying a December gift for a summer drive, first ask us how long the voucher stays valid. Czech Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June, which is 20 June in 2027 and sits inside the open-roof months.

Order before the December rush

A Heureka survey reported by MediaGuru in December 2024 found that half of the people asked planned to buy gifts in November and December, with November the busiest month. For a voucher, the practical deadline is the one you set yourself. Christmas Eve, 25 December and 26 December are public days of rest under Act 245/2000 Sb., and in 2026 Christmas Eve falls on a Thursday. Order early so our team can confirm the car and dates.
