Tolls in Czechia: what a car pays, what trucks pay, and Prague
Tolls in Czechia explained: the vignette for cars, the distance toll for trucks over 3.5 t, no city toll in Prague and low-emission zones.

Czechia has two toll systems, and which one applies depends on weight. A passenger car pays a time-based toll, the electronic vignette, on toll motorway sections. A vehicle over 3.5 tonnes pays a distance-based electronic toll on motorways and selected class I roads. For a car, Prague has no city toll in the official sources we checked, and the Ministry of the Environment says no Czech municipality has set up a low-emission zone. Status: 24 October 2026.
This guide separates what a rental driver pays from what only trucks pay. The vignette itself, with 2026 prices and the purchase steps, has its own guide: Czech motorway vignette 2026.
Two systems, one line at 3.5 tonnes
| Cars and vans up to 3.5 t | Vehicles over 3.5 t | |
|---|---|---|
| Type of charge | Time-based toll: the electronic vignette | Distance-based electronic toll |
| Roads | Toll motorway sections | Motorways and selected sections of class I roads |
| How you pay | The state e-shop edalnice.gov.cz or a sales point | Registration in the electronic toll system and an on-board unit |
| Linked to | Plate number and country of registration | The registered vehicle and its approved on-board device |
| Rental car | Yes | Not relevant to our cars |
The line is the weight in the registration certificate. According to the vignette terms, the total weight stated there decides the category, and the weight of an attached trailer is not added. A passenger car with a trailer stays in the vignette system. A vehicle with a permitted weight above 3.5 tonnes is outside it: the same terms list a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes among those not subject to the time-based toll, and the government portal describes the separate toll for them.
What a rental driver pays: the vignette
On the toll sections of motorways, a passenger car needs a valid vignette before entering. The government portal says vignette charges apply only to motorways. The official list of toll sections names them one by one. It opens with the D0 section Modletice–Slivenec (exits 76–16), 23 km, which is part of the Prague ring, and continues with sections of other motorways. Some entries carry a condition, such as a direction.
Roads that are not on the list need no vignette. Always read the current list for your route, because the list is the rule and a map in a navigation app is not.
Prices, the purchase steps and the rules for a rental plate are in our vignette guide. In short: the vignette is bought for the plate, it cannot be moved to another vehicle, and a driver on a toll road without a valid vignette faces a fine of up to CZK 20,000 according to the state page. At Masons, vignettes and tolls are paid by the customer. The company does not pay them.
What trucks pay: the distance-based toll
The second system is a separate charge for road vehicles with four or more wheels and a maximum permitted weight above 3.5 tonnes. The government toll page says it applies on motorways and certain sections of class I roads. The amount depends on the vehicle type and the distance driven, and the electronic toll system records it.
The vehicle and its operator must be registered in that system. Each vehicle needs an approved electronic device, which cannot be moved to another vehicle. The legal basis named on the portal is Decree No 470/2012. Caravans and campers above 3.5 tonnes count as trucks for this purpose.
None of this changes anything for a passenger car in a rental fleet. We mention it because a visitor who reads about a Czech toll may be reading about trucks, not about cars.
Prague: no city toll, but paid parking
We looked for a charge for entering Prague by car and found none in the official sources. The vignette portal describes only motorway sections, and the Prague parking site describes charges for parking in zones, not for driving in. If you see "paid zones" in Prague, that means parking.
Parking charges depend on the zone and the price band, and on payment you enter the location and the duration. Our guide Parking in Prague explains the blue, purple and orange zones, P+R, the payment channels and the official price ranges.
For a day in the centre the cheapest solution is often to leave the car outside and continue by public transport. A car with a low front or a wide body also needs a garage that it can enter. For a car that fits those streets, look at the BMW M2 Competition or the Mercedes-AMG G63, and check each car page for details.
Low-emission zones: none set up yet
A low-emission zone restricts entry by emission category. The Ministry of the Environment explains the tool and says that no municipality in Czechia has introduced one so far. A municipality can set one up by a decision of its council under the Air Protection Act.
The same page names a Prague restriction that is not a low-emission zone: in some parts of the city, vehicles over 3.5 tonnes that do not meet the Euro 6 standard may not enter. The ministry does not count this as a low-emission zone under the Act. It does not apply to passenger cars.
The ministry page shows no date of last update. Rules for entering cities can change, so look at the ministry page and at the city's own pages before a trip, especially for a stay in another Czech city.
A short plan for your trip
- Decide the roads. If your route uses toll motorway sections, you need a vignette for the rental car's plate.
- Buy the vignette before entering the first toll section, with the plate from your rental confirmation.
- In Prague, plan parking, not tolls. Choose a garage, a P+R or a zone, and read the sign.
- For a drive abroad, ask the team for written permission first. A Czech vignette does not cover another country. Our Prague to Vienna guide explains the steps for Austria.
- Keep the receipts. Tolls, vignettes, parking charges and traffic fines are the customer's responsibility, and official notices go to the driver named in the rental agreement.
If the trip is a longer one, with several motorway days a month, compare the 30-day and annual vignette with the number of days you really need. For an extended rental, see our long-term car rental page and ask the team how the vignette period should match the rental period.

Questions before you go
Do I pay a toll to drive into Prague by car?
In the official sources we checked, there is no toll for entering Prague. Passenger cars pay the vignette on toll motorway sections, and Prague charges for parking in zones. Check the parking sign and the payment method for each place.
Which Czech roads need a vignette for a passenger car?
Toll motorway sections that the official list names section by section, among them the D0 section Modletice–Slivenec. Roads that are not listed need no vignette. Read the current list for your route before you go.
Does a car with a trailer pay the truck toll?
The vignette terms say the weight in the registration certificate decides the category, and the weight of an attached trailer is not added. A passenger car stays in the vignette system. Check the registration certificate of the towing vehicle.
Are there low-emission zones in Czech cities?
According to the Ministry of the Environment, no municipality has introduced one so far. Prague restricts only vehicles over 3.5 tonnes that do not meet Euro 6 in some parts, which the ministry does not treat as a low-emission zone. Check the current rules before a trip.
Who pays tolls and vignettes in a Masons rental?
The customer. Vignettes and tolls are at the renter's expense, and the company does not pay them. Official notices go to the driver named in the rental agreement.
